The town of Truth or Consequences (T or C) sits directly atop a hot springs aquifer that produces 2.5 million gallons of crystal clear water per day. The mineral content of this water is higher than any other found in the US, and there is no unpleasant odor - in fact, some even drink it for its beneficial qualities. Artifacts found in the area indicate that the Mimbres Indians used the springs, and Geronimo is known to have spent time here. The Spanish named the place "Ojo Caliente de las Palomas," or "Hot Springs of the Doves." This name stuck until 1914, when the town became known as Hot Springs. (But it changed again in 1950, when citizens voted to change the name as part of a publicity stunt put together by the producers of the game show "Truth or Consequences.") T or C's Historic Hot Water District is located on the banks of the Rio Grande between two reservoirs - Elephant Butte (the largest body of water in New Mexico), just 5 miles north and Caballo, about 20 miles south. Both lakes provide opportunities for fishing, boating and other water recreation. The shops, galleries and restaurants in T or C's easily walkable downtown area are welcome entertainment for those who would rather not drive. Other attractions in the area include museums, golf courses, and ghost towns, and nearby state parks provide some of the best birding in New Mexico.
